Are you at risk of losing a limb?? Facts you need to know!

April has been dedicated the first National Limb Loss Awareness Month. There are many educational articles written on how to prevent limb loss, how to care for limb loss and many national limb loss statistics.

Did you know??
You have a higer risk of losing a limb if you are 45 years old or older.
You may have a 4 times higher risk of amputation if you are non-White.
If you have diabetes, you are up to 7 times more likely to lose a limb.
If you have peripheral artery disease (PAD), you are more likely to lose a limb.
If it takes a while for a sore on your foot to heal, it increases your chance of losing a limb. Your chance is even greater if you have diabetes or PAD.
If you have pain, tingling, or numbness in your hands and feet you might have nerve damage. Diabetes and PAD can cause nerve damage and nerve damage increases your risk of losing a limb.

Talk with your healthcare provider about your risk of losing a limb. Your healthcare provider will be able to work with you to develop a strategey for preventing limb loss that is right for you.
